How to Clean Up Your Instagram Feed

Hey friends. How’s everyone doing? Today I want to share a tip for taking your peace back on social media: Clean your Instagram follow list.

Over the past 3 days, I’ve been doing a little clean-up. Many of us have migrated over to IG because Facebook was driving us to drink gin straight from the cat dish. No bueno. Causes liver damage. And we followed a bunch of people all willy-nilly and that one photo of vegetarian chili sucked you in but now all you see from that account are those seaweed saran wrap thingys.

Anyway, I decided to curate a new super-fab feed for myself. I’m building a cool tribe of mentors, artists, makers, writers, deep thinkers, and inspiring pals. Here’s how I’m doing it.

ONE.

I went through the list of who I follow. I clicked on each one to see what they’re up to lately. So many of the people I love and follow never show up in my feed (you too??). But taking some time to linger on everyone’s grid and stories was super inspiring and refreshing.

Now, if you are following eleventy-billion accounts, you may want to use an app to clean out the bot accounts or inactive accounts you accidentally (?) followed. This should sweep out a lot of it. Just google “App to clean up Instagram”.

TWO.

When you’re clicking through who you follow, make a quick decision, don’t belabor. For now, I unfollowed accounts that were purely about online business or marketing. I’m cleansing a 5-year habit of binging on business information, marketing, funnels, etc. I also let go of fitness accounts (lots of bikinis! Lots of beautifully tanned bums!), most fashion/clothing accounts, “perfect interiors” accounts, and I limited my meme accounts to 20. LOL.

Now, this is just me – you decide what stays and what goes. Honor your sensitivities. If your IG feed is filled with things that make you feel stressed out, envious, shamed, sad, or pressured, then..BYE!

I’m keeping artists, writers, bloggers, funny people, good friends (obvi), and awesome people living their damn life with aplomb.

I WANT TO EMPHASIZE .. this is about focusing on what you DO want. It’s about building a feed of what your soul needs right now. So you’re just wishing everyone well but deleting what interferes with a happy, inspiring feed.

THREE.

While I was doing this, I opened up a bunch of tabs on my laptop and dropped in the blog/website of people I was curious about. Turns out I have followed a bunch of people without ever having visited their real website. I saved their sites in a “Read Later” bookmark. I’ll go through those over the next few weeks now that “This Is Us” is on winter break. Rude.

Cool Chrome extension I use: OneTab. It collapses a messy browser full of 20+ tabs into one tab with a bulleted list of your previous tabs! Genius. Free. (I’m not an affiliate. I just thought you might appreciate your computer not crashing like mine was).

FOUR.

So now I have a collection of people I really like, respect, and want to get to know. I’m going to be less lurker (which comes from being digitally overwhelmed) and more of a connector + online friend-maker in 2018 🙂

I’m being super intentional in all my interactions and I give you permission to do the same…. your energy and peace of mind is precious, friend! Do what you need to do to build a lovely life for yourself filled with awesome people, inspiring art, and a good hearty laugh every day.

PS. I’m throwing these tips into a once a week newsletter. If you want them, sign up here.

And if you wanna hang out on IG, I’m here for it.

While we’re on the subject…

I am inviting you to join me for The Beautiful Life Project. It is a 3-month program that will teach you to do what I’ve done: organize your living space, create calm routines, blossom in self-care and kind rituals, create a happy work life, write your 1-5-10 year plan, and focus on communication. By the end of our time together, you will have a life you truly love and be well underway to achieving something you’ve always wanted to do. Perhaps a new career or a new romance? What have you been wanting that you just haven’t been able to say, “I’m ready”? Let’s find out and make it happen for you.
